This course will take place on Wednesdays at 1:00 PM for ten weeks (9/6/23 - 11/15/23). Note there is no class on 10/11. This course will be on Zoom.

Course Description:
Each week we will read out loud from the plays of Britain's foremost living playwright, Caryl Churchill.
Recognized for her innovative approaches to theater and narrative, and for taking on some of the most provocative the issues of our time, Churchill has been hailed for helping to make theater speak to modern audiences. We will discuss these issues and others as they come up in her characters and themes: sexual politics, gender bending, cross dressers, abuses of power, White people playing Black characters, and Black people playing White characters. We will read Cloud Nine, Top Girls, and other plays.
Instructor:
Jyl Lynn Felman is the author of three books: Hot Chicken Wings, Cravings, and Never A Dull Moment: Teaching and The Art of Performance. She is a performance artist and a playwright. She has performed her work all across the United States, Canada, Prague Czech Republic and Cuba. Her work has been performed at Women’s International Playwright Festival in Sweden.

Caryl Churchill Plays, Book One, Book Two, published by Methuen Drama Contemporary Dramatists, 1996 and Book 4, published by Nick Hern Books, 2014.
